This summer is just flying by. We've been busy hiking and enjoying the rain (HA!). Girls camping weekend called off this past weekend due to weather. Boo! MC was able to go down to Texas for a few days. Did some fishing so I thought I would post a few pics of that too. MC enjoying Texas!

Busy July

So July has really flown by. I spent the first few weeks in Corpus Christi working for Dr. Mott (which was a nice little break from Sitka even if I was working most of the time!). While I was gone, MC went to Cordova for work, which is north of here. Got to see a glacier pretty close up. Very cool. My parents are here now, and we are doing the tourist thing. Here are a few pictures of what we've been up to.

Back from Camping

About to set out on our hiking/fishing adventure. It was super gorgeous. I had my bathing suit on underneath just in case we could catch some rays! By time we finished fishing and pulled up for our picnic the sun had gone away and the temp was back to low 50s...

So we are back from camping, and it was a huge success for my first time. We stayed at a beautiful cabin. Ventured over to some hot springs, boated around and fished. Saw lots of wildlife, including a whale breaching and a baby seal crying (which sounds like a devil baby-it was really crazy!). Thanks to our friend, Bert, who is a hunting guide, we hiked across another little island that I would never have thought to do by ourselves! I felt like a true Alaskan! This morning a group of otters swam by while we were sitting outside, so I took the kayak out for a closer look and got a few pics before I turned back (didn't want to disturb them too much!). Lots of fun and can't wait to do it again. :)

Smith Update

So I have been pretty bad at updating the blog! We've been keeping pretty busy here in Sitka. Had an awesome getaway in California Wine Country with my sister in May. MC and I also just got back from Vegas. It was really cool because MC's parents were able to meet us there!

Time really just seems to fly by. I cannot believe we will be leaving here in less than a year. So much still to see and do! Sitka is an amazing place with so many cool activities I never would have thought would be here. A couple of weeks ago they had a Texas Country concert with Kyle Park and Cory Morrow for a fundraiser for Autism Speaks. Who would have thought that would be happening up here? We definitely stay busy on this little island. Just wanted to post a few pics of what's been happening lately here. We are going camping this weekend, so I'll have lots of cool pics to post!

March in Sitka

The weather here in Sitka has been cold but beautiful for the past few weeks. It's been sunny almost every day (which is why our city power is about to switch to emergency generators because our source of hydropower is at dangerously low levels due to no rain!), which has been super nice but has been threatening to end any day now (which is fine with me at this point because I highly value my electricity!).

We were lucky enough to enjoy at least one last nice weekend before the next round of liquid sunshine. MC went out camping on Friday at one of the cabins off of the island and had a great time. I didn't go because I already had tickets for a whale watch cruise for Saturday morning, which was awesome. Perfect time of year because the herring fishery is about to kick off here in Sitka, which brings in a lot of whales. Weather was nice, waters were calm. Saw lots of whales (none breaching unfortunately), tons of sea otters and sea lions. Very cool. Here are a few pics from our weekend adventures. MC went out fishing with some friends last weekend and they caught lots of rockfish and halibut so I had to throw a pic of that in too.

Indian River Hike

Went out to enjoy the snow today on a hike on Indian River. So beautiful that I had to post some pics. And yes that is Deuce swimming in the river. He just loves the water-no matter how cold it is!

Winter Fun

It's been nice weather here until the past few days. Our snowy weather has turned into rain and more rain. Here are a few pics from when it was nice, including when we took Deuce out onto Swan Lake when it was frozen. He really didn't know what to think about it. I also took the dogs to the beach to get that pic of snowy Mt. Edgecumbe, but I couldn't let them go down to the rocks because it was sooo icy. All of the water trapped in the rocks was frozen solid. It was really beautiful. There is nothing as beautiful as winter weather to this Texas girl!

Christmas break

We were lucky enough to go home for three weeks at Christmas this year. It was so nice being with family. We have the two cutest nieces in the world, Annalee and Kate (very soon to be joined by a third, Allyson), who kept us thoroughly entertained. At the end of our trip, MC and his brother Jim, went to Arkansas for a duck hunt. Here are a few pics from our Christmas break.

Alaskan Adventures

Some friends took us out on Sunday to recover a HUGE bear they shot the night before but couldn't move because it was too big. We had a great day. Saw the sunrise and sunset on the water. Saw orcas, humpbacks, otters and even caught an octopus on our skiff anchor. And of course the huge bear. The top pic is the recovery effort of getting the bear out of the low area it was in to a flat spot. What a day!

Back from Hawaii

Now I see why people flock from the cold to go to Hawaii! We had a fantastic time, and the weather was so nice. Just posting a few pics from our trip (more are on facebook). We did a helicopter tour (which was super turbulent and a little scary for me-of course it didn't bother MC at all), some hiking and ziplining (which was SO much fun!). I can't wait to do ziplining again! I hope we are able to go back to Kauai before we leave Alaska because it really is a perfect getaway. We only have a year and half left here though so who knows. Time really flies up here. Now that we are nice and tanned, we are ready for winter (lots of snow on the mountains already but none in town yet).

Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day weather here was SO nice, and MC and I were both lucky enough to have the day off. He headed out fishing, so my friend and I decided to hike Mt. Verstovia (elevation 2500). It was FANTASTIC. Hard but well worth it. AND I was actually able to get out of bed this morning. Pretty amazing since I've never attempted anything that requires that much energy! :) Here are some views from the top (kind of a panoramic view from up there). What a great way to end the summer!

Of course Labor Day weekend is here, which means summer is over! Boo! We have had other clues to that, mainly the days getting shorter. Right now the day length is probably normal, but I know that dark at 4pm is around the bend! The weather has also been getting yuck with a few absolutely gorgeous days sprinkled in. I took some pics on my walk this morning to show how one of these fantastic days starts out (quality is not so great b/c it's on my phone-when will I learn to always go out with a camera!. :) The other pics are of us enjoying a beautiful summer day hiking Beaver Lake/Herring Cove. A nice day here is worth the rainy ones. :) However...we know that the fall will be long so we've planned a break to HAWAII! :) It will be just what we need when it's been 30 rainy days in a row. :)

One year in Sitka!

So we've been here one year now, and I really notice a difference in the way I perceive the temperature. I'm really nervous to move back down south because I might overheat the first day back! Easter Sunday

It's actually SO beautiful here in Sitka today! We went out for a hike with the dogs and then out to the gun range with some friends. In case you didn't know I've been working at a sporting goods/gun store for the past couple of months. MC says it's the best job I've ever had (due to all of his new toys). The first pic is of eagles. They are everywhere right now because of all of the herring spawning near the shore. They are really beautiful! I am feeling very lucky to live in such a gorgeous place! :)

Herring Season

Spring is here! The herring are coming to Sitka and so are the fisherman! Our harbor is full right now. This is big business up here, so it's really exciting! With the fish come the whales. We saw quite a few today, and I put the best pic I got up. You can see the spout really well (that little puff looking things right above the shoreline!). They were really far away, but we could see them great with our binocs. Can't wait to see everyone playing bumper boats in the next few days.

Sun Valley trip

This year MC and I took our ski trip to Sun Valley, ID. It was awesome. Great weather. Great skiing. Fun with friends. Perfect vacay. I know it seems weird to want to go some place cold when we live somewhere cold, but there is no skiing in Sitka. Now that the Smiths have gotten me hooked on skiing, I really like it! I'm not good, but I manage to stay on my feet. We're already trying to plan to go there again next year! :)

Last night was the dinner marking MC's official initiation into the Chief's Mess here in Sitka. He's been undergoing the initation procedure for a few months, so this was a nice reward. Just wanted to put up a few pics from the dinner. CONGRATS, MC!!!

Herring Cove Hike

Some girlfriends and I decided to go hiking on Friday no matter what the weather, so we hiked the Herring Cove trail in a mild rain (unavoidable right now in Sitka! :)). It was very beautiful. The snow is all melted in town, but there is still some in the mountains. I heard right now it's colder in Texas and Florida than it is here! Makes me laugh! :)

Texas Time

I just got back from visiting Texas (as most of you know!) and really enjoyed being home. I didn't really enjoy the weather (snow, no sun--just like being in Sitka!), but I had a great time. MC is home now getting some hunting in before he heads back here for Christmas. I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for sending such great Christmas pictures to us! I have them out on our table for all to see! I don't have any pics now, but I'll be posting something soon. As a welcome home present for me, Mother Nature let it snow last night so it's been a beautiful wintery day today. I don't mind snow--just not in Texas!!! :) Happy holidays to everyone!

Winter fun

We bought a sled today to enjoy the snow. Deuce thinks that it is a giant frisbee and also wants to sled with me (we were not successful with that!). We had a great time. I love living where it snows!

Yesterday was a terrible weather day. The power of the ocean is really amazing! I tried to take a picture of how choppy it was yesterday, but it really didn't do it justice. The pic came out nicely, though.

Snow!

Last night it started snowing so we went out to play a little. The second pic is what the area behind our house looked like yesterday afternoon. The top pic was this morning. Not much, maybe an inch, but still enough to look nice. All the kids were out sledding down the little hill today. The dogs are totally cool with it. Deuce was a little iffy at first, but then he started catching snowballs! It is really SO beautiful here. Today MC and I were driving into town and two eagles were flying right next to us. I wish I would have had my camera. I can't wait for everyone to come visit and see this for themselves!

Snow is coming

I was excited about the mountains getting snowy, but now it's really starting to get white! It was in the 30s this morning, and they are saying in might snow on Saturday! I guess we'll see...

Alaska Day 2009

Alaska Day is a big celebration in Sitka, marking the turning over of Alaska to the US from Russia. They have a big parade, and yes-it was suprisingly big. All the Coasties marched in it, and I managed to snap a pic of MC as he was walking by. The 60s also did a flyover the parade route (the main area downtown) with a couple of Army helicopters. Here are a few pics from the parade.

Columbus Day weekend

We both had off yesterday and today, so we really enjoyed our Columbus day weekend. Watched lots of football and laid on the couch yesterday, but we did take the time to walk over the bridge to town to Castle Hill (well...Paco and I walked over with a friend while Deuce and MC watched the progress of NFL football). Castle Hill is the site where they did the official giving over of Alaska from Russia to the US (the pic with all of the colorful trees). This coming weekend is the celebration of that day (called Alaska Day) so there are a lot of events going on this week and next weekend.

Today was absolutely gorgeous so we went for a hike with the dogs on the Indian River trail. Once again, Deuce's lab instincts kept him in the water more than on land. He was okay until the river started taking him downstream too fast. He made it out, though. Enjoyed the walk and are enjoying the sunny weather.

Fall is here and winter is coming

There has been noticably more snow on the mountains this week, so we went on a ride to take some pics today and ended up on an impromptu hike at Beaver Creek Lake. The dogs LOVE hiking. We hadn't been on that trail before and it was quite steep in places and quite narrow in others (as you can see in the pic with me). The dogs had no problems!

John Brown's Beach

It was a GORGEOUS day here in Sitka. It was sunny all day (first time in about three weeks), but quite cold. There was ice on MC's windshield this morning, so the temperature is definitely dropping here! We decided to take the dogs to John Brown's Beach, which is on the base. They had a blast and Deuce would not stop swimming. Clearly the cold ocean water doesn't bother him at all.

MC's Camping Trip

MC went on a camping trip this weekend at a nearby island. The forest service here rents out these really great cabins on neighboring islands for very cheap. The guys had a good time. Did a little duck hunting (no kills to report) and relaxing. Saturday morning they had a visitor at the campsite-a bear! The pics above are the bear walking on the beach in front of the cabin. They shooed him away and then he went over one of the guy's rafts and popped it! Thought you guys would enjoy pics from the encounter.

Juneau

MC had a class in Juneau this week, so I joined him on Thursday and we came back on Saturday on the fast ferry. The one picture is of the inside of the ferry. I think all of us Texans just picture the Port A ferry when we hear that word, so I wanted to let you guys see how we are riding in style. I also have a video that MC took of how the fast ferry moves. It's by turbines (for any of you who are interested in that kind of stuff! :)). The rest of the pics are from our time in Juneau. The main point of my visit was stocking up at Costco and Walmart, so I didn't have much time to sightsee. We did get to see the Mendenhall Glacier while we were there, which is very beautiful. Sorry about the thumb in the pic of us. I guess I shouldn't have asked an 85 year old woman to take our pic!

New House

So we are finally in our new house. YAY! About time! We got to move in last Thursday and are already settled in. Every box has been unpacked and everything is set up. Now we can relax and enjoy our new place. No pics this time, but we will post something new shortly!

Hike to Heart Lake

Today we took the dogs on a hike. The trails up here are the only places they can be off of the leash. They LOVED it. Deuce ran through every stream and checked out every waterfall on the way up. Then both Paco and Deuce swam at the lake. They didn't even notice the water was cold (and it was 55 degrees out). Since we've been back they haven't moved! On the hike up we did see lots of bear scat on the trails, but we bought the dogs bear bells so we didn't run into any unexpected company. That's a good thing!

A little update

Not much has been happening here, so I haven't really blogged in a while. We're just settling in and loving it here. Not in our house yet, but hopefully soon. Maybe that's why I've been putting off posting something because I thought I would be able to post our new address and pics of our house! Keep your fingers crossed for us. I went to Anchorage earlier this week for some training for my job. It's very laid-back and of course, beautiful. They have tons of float planes that dock at this lake near where I stayed so I took some pics of that. The other pics I'm posting are just some random pics from this week. We are really enjoying it here, meeting people, and really starting to feel at home. Sitka is a great town!

Rainy Sunday take two

Today we took advantage of the rainy Sunday and checked out the movie theater here. It's actually pretty good. Two screens (in two totally different locations) AND they change the movies out each week, so you've gotta move fast. Afterwards we went to Whale Park and took the dogs walking around. It's just a nice area where you can view whales when it's the right time. It's also just a really pretty area with lots of stairs. The dogs are still getting used to being out and about in the rain. Poor Paco's fur just soaks up all the moisture in the air! I don't think the picture does his hair justice, but anyone who knows him knows that his fur gets the crimped look when he's wet. Check out the ears!

Hope all these pics of scenary aren't starting to look the same! :) These are taken from our island looking at surrounding islands. They are a little more misty today because it's been raining pretty steady all day.

Blue Lake

After dinner last night we went driving up to Blue Lake, which is our town's reservoir. It's up in the mountains, so it was a nice drive up. It was a rather misty day but very beautiful up there. The dogs love driving around with the windows down. Beats the Super 8! We didn't see any bears, or any other wildlife for that matter. It was really quiet up there.

Pull tabs-a new obsession

We've been introduced to the Alaskan version of scratch-offs. They are called pull tabs, and they sell them at the bars here. Instead of scratching the tickets, you just pull the paper tabs back to reveal if you have a winner. It is very addictive. I won 3 whole dollars last night (which I put back into less lucky pull-tabs), so here's a pic with one of my winners for the Crown Royale pull tab game.

Rainy Sunday

Today we just laid low because it was pretty rainy. We did go out to try and bear watch after dinner. Our first attempt we didn't see anything, then we went back out about 845 and BINGO!

We saw a sow and two cubs by the river eating fish. I got the best pics that I could because it was overcast and getting dark. We were just across a stream from them. They were SO cute, but that's the closest I want to get! The other pics are from our first failed attempt (just so you won't forget what we look like! :)). I'm sure I will eventually get sick of the rain, but it was still so pretty this weekend. The clouds get SO low, and I think that is really beautiful.

Today was the first non-sunny day since we've arrived. It was considerably cooler, but MC still wore shorts after work! It pretty much looked like this all day, with fog all around the mountains. The top pic has Mt. Edgecombe (our extinct volcano) in the distance. The next two pics are just around town. The forecast for this weekend is rain, but everyone around here is happy. The nice beautiful weather we've been having means that it hasn't been raining, which means that the mountain streams are low are water, which means there are very few fish upstream, which means the bears are coming down to town! There have been quite a few people "swiped" on hiking trails in the past few weeks, so most trails are closed. AND now many people are seeing bears in their trash right here in town. It's a whole different world up here! So hopefully the weekend rain will solve the town's bear situation. Right now I think MC and I are the only ones in Sitka that haven't seen a bear. We'll keep you posted on that! :)

MC's new place

MC has been at work since the second day we've been here. I've finally got some pics of the place (the bottom pic is the hangar from the water). He's working on the jayhawk helicopters (60s), which are bigger than the dolphins he's used to. Now he's on big iron. Go Chief Smith!

A day on the water

Today a friend took us out on his boat to see the sights around Sitka. The bottom pic is one of the harbors on the island. The next two are just a few pics of the land as seen from the water. Sitka is surrounded by lots of other little islands, so we cruised around some of these. The second one from the top is of a really cool jellyfish we saw. It's a little hard to see, but it was really cool and all pinkish orangish and BIG. Way bigger than what we're used to. When we were coming back towards home we saw this sea lion (top pic) eating a fish. Wasn't fast enough to capture that, but did get a pic of him near the boat. He was pretty curious and swam up right to the boat, but he didn't surface. Really enjoyed being out on the water. A little different from South Rexas. Instead of being in 12 inches of water, most of our cruise today was in 150-200ft of water. WOW! A little bit of a change!

Our first week

It has been such beautiful weather since the second day we've been here. Everyone local says this is pretty unusual. We're really enjoying it, though. To answer your questions about the daylight/darkness thing, it gets dark here by 10 and the sun comes up sometime around 4ish (it could be earlier, but I don't know!). We take the dogs on a nice long walk in town everyday, and Deuce is SO anxious to get in the water! I don't think he realizes what a surprise he is in for. Just wanted to post some pics of this gorgeous weather. Note MC is wearing shorts! As for cruise ships, there are up to three a day here!

We made it!

We finally arrived in Sitka yesterday. The cruise was really fantastic. Half of the time we had on shorts! It was unbelievable. As we started getting more north, though, it definitely cooled off. We saw several whales, seals, and sea lions on our trip. Very cool!. As for Sitka, the town is VERY small but beautiful. We will hopefully be in our house a week from today. As of now we are in a hotel until our stuff arrives. Here are a few pics from our trip. The first pic is of our first day here in Sitka. It was about 60 degrees and drizzly. Welcome to ALASKA! :)

Utah and Idaho

We haven't had internet for a few days so here's an update of what's been going on with us. We got to Utah on Friday night and went whitewater rafting Saturday morning then did a rock-climbing sunset Hummer tour in the evening (yes--we actually went down that stretch we're standing next to in the hummer). Sunday was spent driving to Hailey, Idaho, to visit with my wonderful friend and tour guide, Kelsey. We checked out a lot of the sites around the area, including some beautiful lakes and streams in the mountains. The weather is so wonderful and now I understand why people up here are so outdoorsy! Beats the Texas heat! Tonight we are in Walla Walla, Washington. Not too much longer before we board the ferry. I can't believe it! We are having a blast on our road trip and our dogs are being super troopers. Especially after Deuce got some doggie downers today at the vet (that's him looking nice and mellow)!

I can't believe it's already almost time to move! The family gave us a great going away party this past weekend (which of course I didn't take any pics of because we were too busy having fun!). So, I decided to put up pics from the Coast Guard day at the CC Hooks game that we went to a couple of weeks ago. We really have enjoyed it here and will miss it! We'll really miss our Corpus Christi family!

Well it looks like we have sold our house. This is just our first step towards Alaska! Time is just flying by, and July will be here before you know it. We are very excited about moving, but we'll always miss our first home.

So, on our way to Lake Tahoe last week we found out that MC is making chief! Great news! Our new station will be Sitka, Alaska. We'll be making the big move this summer, most likely early August. Hoping to get lots of visitors!
